![]() In Infinity War and Endgame, both finish their time in the MCU as heroes. In contrast, Iron Man begins as a self-made hero and ends with him as a puppet for government institutions.Įxcept that's a little bit of a lie and not quite where the story ends for each of them. Army and ends with him on the run by his own choices. ![]() Captain America's story begins as a mascot for the U.S. While it's unlikely that this was the plan from the beginning by Marvel Studios, Tony Stark and Steve Rogers end their respective arcs exactly where they began for the other individual. Tony is now putting his entire faith in governments to hold him responsible for his power, and Steve rebels against said institutions, convinced of his own judgment in doing the right thing. This is where each character's journeys land in an interesting place. The world isn't as black and white as it was in the 1940s, and Steve finds it drowning under seas of grey.Īnd so, in Captain America: Civil War, Tony and Steve find themselves on opposing sides of the Sokovia Accords, an attempt by the United Nations to hold the Avengers accountable for their actions. Tony and Steve separately discover different attempts by S.H.I.E.L.D to weaponize the Tesseract. What's worse is that Tony is proven right. With a simple sense of distrust, Steve questions who he's working for and the side he's on for the first time in his life. When Steve confronts Tony about hacking the S.H.I.E.L.D secure servers, Tony instills something that changes the course of Steve's character throughout the rest of the MCU. Steve initially approaches the mission as a soldier, carrying out orders and implicitly trusting the organization he is working for. As it's a government organization, he naturally does not trust S.H.I.E.L.D and immediately assumes there is an ulterior motive at play. In the film's extended second act aboard the Helicarrier, Tony starts hacking S.H.I.E.L.D's secret files about the Tesseract. The Avengers is the first instance where Steve and Tony's journeys intersect, and it's where Tony's beliefs have a profound effect on Steve. By the end of the film, Tony learns to open up to those close to him, such as Pepper and Rhodey, but his inability to work well with others results in him not being approved for S.H.I.E.L.D's Avengers Initiative. This fractures his relationship with Rhodey, leading the latter to steal the Mk II armor and create War Machine. He stands firm and puts his belief above those in power. He is deliberately difficult to work with and proudly proclaims that he's "successfully privatized world peace." He does not trust anyone else to be responsible with the power of Iron Man, especially the U.S. This leads directly into Iron Man 2, where he inevitably refuses to share that responsibility with anybody else. The suit is a consequence of Tony taking personal responsibility for his own actions. In the first film, he breaks away from the grip Obadiah Stane has on his company and life - Iron Man is, quite literally, a self-made hero. ![]() In the first two Iron Man films, Tony Stark's journey is defined by his independence and ability (or lack thereof) to work with other people.
